District Announces Make-Up Day Plan

Amended substitute House Bill 416, recently signed by Governor Kasich, gives schools an additional four calamity days, but only after they have used four of their own scheduled contingency days.

Arcanum-Butler has missed a total of 10 days to this point.  Three of the four required contingency days have been made up by utilizing two blizzard bag days and by having students attend school on President’s Day.  House Bill 416 permits days 10-13 to count as additional calamity days.  Therefore, the district must make-up only one additional day based on HB 416 requirements.

Because the district previously submitted a plan for utilizing three blizzard bags, we will use the third blizzard bag as our last required contingency day.  Students will be assigned the blizzard bag on April 21 and be given two weeks to complete the required assignments.

Though blizzard bag #3 had previously been distributed to all students, teachers may find it necessary to adjust the assignments to make those assignments relevant for a particular class.  Those changes will be communicated ahead of time to all students.  If you have any questions about the assignments, please direct those questions to the teacher and/or appropriate building level principal.

As a reminder, the last day of school will be May 29.  We appreciate your time and patience during this “extreme” year and look forward to warmer weather!

Renewal Levy FAQs

On November 4, voters of the Arcanum-Butler Local School District will be voting on a Renewal Levy.  Below are a list of frequently asked questions and answers to those questions.  For additional information, please contact Superintendent, John Stephens or Treasurer, Matt Huffman at 692-5174.

Renewal Levy on the November Ballot

On November 4th, the Arcanum - Butler Local School District will be asking the voters to approve a .75% income tax RENEWAL for the next 5 years. This is not a request for additional money.  The .75% income tax generates approximately $875,000.00 per year and is necessary to maintain the high level of education students are currently receiving.  The money generated from the income tax is for the specific purpose of general operations of the school district.  General operating funds can only be used for supplies, staff, support staff, equipment, technology, utilities and all other items required in the general operations of the district.

REMINDER: No School

There is no school for students on Friday, November 7.

Greenville Federal Donates to Arcanum High School Record Board Project

This fall, Arcanum Butler Local Schools placed brand new athletic record boards in the school. These record boards were made possible because of the very generous donation from Greenville Federal. Greenville Federal, home of the Money$aver Mortgage, is the oldest bank headquartered in Darke County. This monetary donation demonstrates Greenville Federal’s pride in being a true local community bank calling Darke County its headquarters and home for the past 131 years.  Investing back to local communities has long been a trademark of Greenville Federal and with this donation, Arcanum students, parents, and alumni will be able see some of the great athletic accomplishments of their student athletes.

District Receives High Marks on Report Card

Arcanum-Butler was just 1 out of 3 districts in all of Darke, Montgomery, Miami, Preble and Mercer County to receive all A's and B's on recently released report card measures.

Just as every school building sends home a report card to tell you how well your child is learning, our school district and buildings also receive a Local Report Card each year from the Ohio Department of Education.  The Ohio Department of Education recently released report cards for Ohio's School Districts.  This is the second year of the new report card which is intended to give you a clearer picture of how our district and buildings are performing.  Previous report cards used superlatives such as "Excellent" or "Continuous Improvement" to describe the performance of schools.  The newer reporting system uses letter grades A-F to grade various measures under six broad categories:  Achievement, Progress, Gap Closing, Graduation Rate, K-3 Literacy and Prepared for Success.

Governor Proclaims January as Board Recognition Month

The Arcanum-Butler Local School District is joining with other districts throughout the state to recognize the important contributions school board members make to their communities.

School board members are ordinary people who have an extraordinary dedication to ourpublic schools. It is time we thanked them for their untiring efforts.Too often we forget about the personal sacrifices school board members routinely make.Too often we forget about the important role school board members play in assuring local control over our public schools, control that is in the hands of people we know … people who are our neighbors.  Too often we forget that, in the tradition of a representative democracy, school board members are our connection to influencing how our public schools are governed.

For the 2014-2015 school year, the Arcanum-Butler Local School District will continue to use calamity days as they have in the past in the event of school cancellations.  Some Ohio school districts changed from a minimum number of days to the new minimum number of hours of required attendance for students.  However, the change from days to hours does not apply to collective bargaining agreements executed prior to July 1, 2014, as is the case with our school district.  The district will utilize 5 calamity days and will use make-up days and blizzard bag days as needed.

As of February 19, the district has missed 6 days, therefore students must complete Blizzard Bag #1.  The district will only use April 6 as a make-up day in the event that Blizzard Bags #2 and #3 are exhausted.

Arcanum High School will be celebrating our prom and after-prom festivities on April 30, 2016. After Prom is a very special fun-filled, alcohol-free, and drug-free event that follows Prom. After Prom is open to ALL Juniors/ Seniors and their invited guests. A junior or senior need not attend Prom to go to After Prom. This year our after-prom will be at Jumpy's in Troy, Ohio. Jumpy's provides laser tag, inflatables, foam ball zone, and an arcade to entertain students. We also provide unlimited pizza, drinks, and snacks for students who attend. We are seeking donations to help defray the cost of after-prom to ensure that all students who want to attend are able to attend. If you, your business, or your local organization would like to donate to after-prom you can contact High School Principal Jason Stephan at jason_stephan@darke.k12.oh.us or 937-692-5174. District Seeks Input Regarding Possible Addition of a School Resource Officer

Over the last year, the Arcanum-Butler Local School District Board of Education and Administration have been researching and discussing the possibility of adding a full-time School Resource Officer or SRO. The discussion began at the county level as a potential way to help address the increased drug activity in the county and schools, assist districts in prevention/education of youth-related social and behavioral issues, and provide an additional layer of security in keeping our students and staff safe. Both District and Village representatives attended the same county meetings and upon hearing about the possibility on a county-wide level, suggested a partnership between the District and the Village of Arcanum as a better option.  This option could possibly provide a full-time SRO and the partnership itself could further strengthen the community/school relationship.

NHS Trick or Treat Canned Food Drive

Next week is our annual food drive sponsored by the Arcanum National Honor Society at AHS! This year we are fortunate to have the middle school teaming up with us to help more people in Arcanum. This year our goal is to collect 5000 items between the MS and HS. The building that brings in the most items will get to throw a pie at their principal! During the school week, students are encouraged to bring in non-perishable items to school.
Friday at the final home football game of the year, fans can bring money to donate or a canned food item and get one dollar off admission to the game!
On Sunday during Trick or Treat, AHS students will be canvassing the community to collect items donated by the Arcanum community. If you would like to help but will not be home during the Trick or Treat event, please leave your items on your front porch or drop them off at the high school. Please help us feed those in need in Arcanum!

Please share this information with our Arcanum community so that we can make a tremendous difference to citizens!

Arcanum-Butler Bus Involved in Minor Accident

At approximately 3:55 pm this afternoon an Arcanum-Butler school bus was involved in a fender/bender accident at the corner of Alternate 49 South and Hollansburg-Sampson Rd.  The students and the driver were not injured.  Additionally, there were no reported injuries of the driver and passengers of the other vehicle.

A One-Call message was sent to parents with students who ride the bus.  Students were transported onto another district bus for transportation to their homes.  Parents of the students riding the bus at the time were called by school administration to be notified of the accident.  The accident is currently under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff's Office.

We appreciate the actions taken by the bus driver to maintain safety for the riders and the cooperation of our transportation department and additional driver who quickly assisted in transporting the students home.

Bus Driver Shortage Impacts Routing

Due to a shortage in substitute bus drivers, routing may be delayed at times during the school year.  If your son/daughter rides a bus, please review the letter.  Letters were also sent home with students.
