All visitors to Arcanum-Butler Local Schools, including the Arcanum Early Learning Center and Arcanum Virtual Academy, will notice a change regarding building entry this year.
The administration, with support from the Arcanum Board of Education, made the decision to put the measure in place based on recent recommendations from local and state authorities as well as concerns about building access.
Since the opening of the K-12 building, access during the day has been limited to the main entrance (now labeled door 1). Upon entering the first set of doors, visitors must wait for a building secretary to provide entry into the office area. The district recognizes this may be somewhat of an inconvenience, but believes the added security measure is necessary. When visitors knock on the door, one of the building secretaries will press a button that releases the door for entry. Visitors will hear a light "knock" when the button has been pushed. The Early Learning Center and AVA are equiped with intercom systems that visitors will use to gain access by pressing the button and identifying themselves to preschool staff. Preschool students and visitors are asked to enter from Ivester Street and AVA students are asked to use the southwest entrance.
In addition to the use of controlled access points, the district has numbered the various doors that will be used primarily for entrance at the beginning of the day and during special events.
We appreciate your patience and support as we continue to make safety a priority for our students.
